How Does It Work?

Most of the time, the desire to smoke simply disappears following treatment. Furthermore, the treatment works in such a way that a potential relapse often creates a profound aversion to cigarettes. Ask around—you may know someone who has already benefited from acupuncture to quit smoking.

Much less expensive than continuing to smoke, the cessation treatments at Clinique Shanti Acupuncture Montréal are also free of side effects and include 5 sessions at the regular price of an acupuncture treatment, which amounts to $635, including file opening fees.

Research conducted at Lincoln Hospital in New York demonstrated the effectiveness of auricular acupuncture (auriculotherapy) for the rehabilitation of problems related to substance abuse. Dr. Michael Smith (Smith 1979, 1990; Smith et al. 1982) developed a 5-point protocol for rehabilitation, which includes the points "Lung," "Shen Men," "Sympathetic Autonomic Nervous System," "Kidney," and "Liver," all located on the ear. It was in 1985 that the NADA organization was founded, which also gave its name to this protocol now used internationally.

These points, together with other points selected based on the patient's presentation, are also used for the treatment of tobacco cessation. Clinical trials have further led to the conclusion that the NADA protocol is equally effective for the treatment of alcoholism (Bullock et al. 1989), cocaine dependence (Margolin et al. 1993), and opioid withdrawal (Yang and Kwok 1986).

Olivier Roy, acupuncturist at Clinique Shanti, has acquired considerable experience over the years in the field of rehabilitation in various specialized settings; at the Centre Dollard Cormier as an acupuncturist, as well as at the Clinique Nouveau Départ, as an acupuncturist and facilitator responsible for group therapy sessions. While alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal require, in conjunction with acupuncture treatments, medical supervision, other recreational psychotropic substances, such as tobacco or cannabis, can be treated without intervention other than acupuncture treatment. Some patients will need additional support and may choose to also pursue group therapies and other related approaches, but in reality, for tobacco cessation, acupuncture alone is sufficient in many cases.
